"The idea is to point out several areas where the US is indeed exceptional compared to other developed liberal democratic states, but not in a positive sense. US levels of income and wealth inequality, for instance, have reached 'outlier' proportions. The cost of US healthcare is way beyond the average. The ideologically segregated news media landscape also puts the US in a quite unique position compared with other developed polities. One of my contentions is that American citizens are not aware of the social compacts that are common elsewhere, and that the ideology of 'exceptionalism' serves in part to perpetuate this lack of awareness.”
