Marriage is one of the 16 rites of passage which men (I do mean men!!) are required to perform in their lifetimes. Although, some changes have taken place in how the rules are observed, most of the rules governing the ritual laid down by Manu are still observed to this day. Manu, in some Hindu traditions is the first man, and the legendary author of an important Sanskrit law code, the Manu-smriti (Laws of Manu).
The talk, from the anthropological perspective, will focus on customs governing the choice of a suitable partner and the rituals surrounding the actual ceremony.
The goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of marriage from Hindu perspective.
- 1. Ways of finding a partner (arranged/love)
- 2. Rules of marriage (who can marry whom)
- 3. Dowry/bride wealth (exchange of money)
- 4. Wedding rituals/ceremonies (dress, food etc.)
- 5. Residence rules (where do the couples live after marriage)
